Installing woes

I have a brand new Intel NUC that I am trying to install ubuntu on.

It has a mSATA drive and I cannot make it boot from it

Having been through the install process several times and set the boot
order in the bios to SATA first then USB it cannot boot from the SATA

Interestingly the mSATA is 40GB and the bios says 6GB

I am wondering where to turn. This has never happened to me. In the
past if GRUB installs (LILO before that) then it could boot from it - or
fail to boot, but this time it ignores it and boots from the USB (if
inserted) else asks for a boot media to be installed.
