Backwards Compatibility (Windoze OS)

Anyone got some clues about hardware issues for replacing, say,
Vista with XP, or XP with W2k, or even jumping from Vista back
as far as W2k?

Would there be different potential problems with laptops vs desktops?

A neighbour has a ComCrap laptop, (probably from DSE or Leemings),
which runs like a dog in quicksand. From memory, the half a gig RAM is
likely the biggest problem. The other crap that starts at boot-up, (Norton
etc.,) is not helping.

If she agrees, I'll do what I can to strip out a lot of the start-up items,
that are hogging resources. If I fail, I might bring it to the next meeting.
However, the going back from Vista question still seems worth thinking
about.

Would it work? I have a genuine XP CD, here, that I could bring along.
