Its in a room one wall away from the area where he wants sit with his vista laptop and use it. In a straight line, maybe 8-10 metres. The wall appears to be standard issue modern house construction ( no visible concrete/steel/corrugated iron ) You can sit in the same room as the router and use the net fine - leave the room and the connection ( while still reading 90% connectivity ) drops out as soon as you try to do anything. When you try to reconnect, the router is no longer detected ( all of the neighbors ones are still visible though ) so you take the lappy back into the router room and still nothing.
