CPU Hogging

Some time back, I had a real problem with resources being
hogged by something unknown. A list member
recommended Process Explorer, a very handy utility which
enabled me to pin-point the problem (tucked away in a
svchost instance) and remove it.

More recently, likely immediately after a Skype upgrade,
my PC slowed to a crawl. E.g. five seconds after a key press,
before the letter appeared on the screen! After a re-boot or
two, back to Process Explorer, I went.

100% CPU use between skype, jqs.exe and anvir.exe.  At
first, I wasn't sure if the % figure per program meant the %
of the present amount of CPU usage, or the % of the total
available CPU. Especially as the System Idle Process reports
100% CPU use when the graph is showing less than 2% total
CPU resources in use. After a while I decided that for jqs.exe
and anvir.exe, it was reporting total CPU resource usage,
rather than a % of whatever was the present CPU usage.

jqs is listed as a Java Quick Starter Service
skype you'll know about and I imagine
AnVir, as well.

After an uninstall and reinstall, skype seemed to 'come
right.' But the other two still seem to hog 100% CPU,
between them. Setting priority to Idle: 4 didn't seem to help.
Suspending them both drops total CPU use to below 2%.

I'm a bit confuddled by all this. Anyone got any pearls of
wisdom? (For reason explained before, switch to Linux is
not a valid one, OK!)
