Turns out that SP1 was on my WinXP disk, so all up and running, now in 
the (long) process of installing programmes.  Thanks for your help, 
saved me a lot of angst!  Much appreciated.  Also learned a major lesson 
- post here before googling!!  If I had followed what I encountered 
there I'd be tearing my hair out by now!!
