Yes thats typically how you install them, however the manufacturers usually make them a part of the Windows OEM install - and therefore they are hidden away in some compressed archive on the recovery disk. You can verify this by inserting the recovery disk and telling Device Manager to search the cd for drivers (im guessing it wont find any). So yeah, in my opinion your best bet (if you cant simply boot from the recovery disk and use it to reformat the harddrive/install its version of windows) is to get the drivers from the manufacturers website (perhaps on your internet connection if her dialup is too slow) and follow the installation instructions that will probably be provided.
