Hi Chris,

Not sure what distro you are running, but I believe what you are
looking for are UUIDs
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universally_unique_identifier).
/etc/fstab on my Ubuntu system has the following info:

# Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier
# for a device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name
# devices that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
# / was on /dev/sdd1 during installation
UUID=fe5b6b56-2725-41c0-99bf-123316cd8586  /              ext4
errors=remount-ro      0  1
# swap was on /dev/sdd5 during installation
UUID=dfba75f4-9da8-4a7e-8e30-3755b157feb2  none           swap
sw                     0  0
