If you can get to a shell, just apt-get remove it, assuming an older
kernel is still installed.

You could also try moving all references to it from /boot and
re-generating grub's menu (cant remember the commands for this off the
top of my head sorry)

Also, I cant say ive encountered your problem, but im using a 2.6.39
kernel from the kernel PPA
