Re: forgot root pass

If your using lilo, boot up with "linux single" at the prompt.

if your are using grub, I think you have to change the init option to 1 
at the end of the kernel boot parameters list.  Hopefully someone that 
knows grub better than me can confirm/deny this.

both of those will get you into single user mode, just type "passwd" 
and your good to go.

this will work assuming you didn't password protect lilo or grub with 
the same password. Otherwise, good time to upgrade ;-)
