Local filesharing

Can anyone recommend a good way of sharing files on a local network?

I use the pseudo-Windows-filesharing program called Samba now, but I would like to avoid it in favor an all-Linux approach. I have considered NFS, but I read that it's quite insecure.

I'm running Kubuntu 5.04. My aim is to be able to use my two calendar programs on two separate machines on the local network to share one calendar file. So I don't just want to be able to transfer files, I need to share them (using a mount, presumably.)

What do you guys(/gals?) use as a preferred way of sharing files locally that isn't insecure? Any recommendations?

Many thanks.

Ryan
