Resizing SATA from Kubuntu Live CD

I thought I'd be installing Kubuntu tonight. I can't get past the
partitioning stage. I've got my IDE drive all ready to go, but I need to
repartition and resize my SATA drive partitions before I can go on. The
installer wants an all or nothing configuration. I'm trying google and
the Ubuntu forums, but no luck so far. I tried the latest Gparted, but
it wants no part of the SATA drive. At least not when booting with
default options.

I'm thinking there's a switch I'm missing to enable SATA support when
the CD boots. I'll keep looking.
