Works for me if enough people are interested in a freeform meeting on  
web development tools (Shoot an email to the list if you plan on  
attending tonight). I will have to leave at 8pm tonight (which is  
when the 'official'part of the meeting usually winds down anyway),  
everyone else is of course welcome to stay longer.

I know for a fact that there are a lot of people that do web  
development on this list, hopefully more people will chime in.

I have to warn you though, that i have never used any of the WYSIWYG  
editors on linux. The only ones i have ever used are Frontpage and  
Dreamweaver, and i hate both of those with a passion. They seem to  
get in the way.

Here is a list of the tools that I use:

Text Editor (Linux: Emacs;)
SCP/SFTP Client (Linux: tramp or gftp, i prefer tramp;)
Image Editor (Linux: Gimp)
Color Matching Tool (Linux: http://www.colorschemer.com/online.html)
validator.w3.org (to check my XHTML)

To me, the most important tool is your text editor. It has to be  
setup correctly, good syntax highlighting is important and it has to  
know how to handle HTML files that have javascript, css, and php in  
them and treat those regions in their native modes.

just one warning: i haven't tested that with recent builds of emacs  
(i'm using a different editor on OS X now), so you may need to tweak  
it a little if you give it a try.

If anyone is interested in the software i use on MacOS X just let me  
know. Most of my tools on OS X are not open source though, and when I  
am forced to use windows i use the same tools on windows that I do on  
linux, emacs is just an older version.
