When I first proposed a web page for a US Navy cruiser I was stationed on, 
the people I talked to were convinced that others could get into the ship's 
computers *even while the ship was underway*. Granted, this was back in 
1994, but still.

Go ahead and propose the sledgehammer approach. Maybe, hopefully, they'll 
see how silly their position is regarding blocking just IRC.
