Referring to our last discussion about how to attract more students to
Morlug:
The shop with pins and T-shirts worked great for me.
However, the newcomers, they would first need to see the usefulness of the
movement before they will buy the associated symbolics.

So, what about setting up a live-linux distro packed with some useful
software which will run out of the box?
My favorite would be Octave.org.
Then we could advertise something like: "Free Matlab for Everyone!", and let
people download precompiled
binaries that would run on our live-CD, or if they choose to install Linux,
they could get the binaries from our site as well, or could install it with
yum -y install octave, or apt-get .... or whatever.

To make it less expensive, we could offer the iso image to download from
morlug.org, or give the CD for those who come to our meetings. The download
catalog will be open for everyone to see, but
the download site will be only opened for morlug members.
I am sure we can compile an impressive catalog of useful applications that
run under Linux.
Many people don't know why they need linux, and what they can do with it.
Take even OpenOffice. If we just let the local students see that there is an
alternative to Microsoft Office, which works well and is also free it will
be a nice surprise for many.

An anekdotal evidence from last year: one of our PhD students got his
MS-Powerpoint file corrupted. Powerpoint simply refused to load it no matter
what. And it was an important file of his thesis defense, which he did not
care to backup. So, he asked me to try to open it on Linux. I tried OO, and
it could opened it, and recovered practically all the original content.

Finally, any plans for Saturday night? Maybe a brief tea-party at Blue-Mouse
or such?
