Haven't used it in a very long while, but I think Wubi is stilled shipped in Ubuntu distro's, which allows for running Ubuntu an an app in windows. Unfortunately this is only applicable if you have resources to burn - VM is a bit of an additional resource overhead. I've used various flavours of Linux right off an SD card (& still do) with my own eeePC 701 - install Linux on an 8GB SD & leave the OS on netbook as is. You can have your cake & eat it. (btw. Robin's right about the WiFi & GPU, but that's quite easy to overcome once the installation is complete & you have 'net access over UTP - simply install the "restricted drivers".
