expecting it to live long (or prosper?))

The Wikipedia article illustrates the different ranges competently and

The SLs are?were the cheapies (my personal opinion includes the words 
"barge-pole").

The mid-range was the R-series (I've had these) and is now the Ls.

The tough-stuff is the T-series (I run (another) one of these). Perhaps 
the "T" stands for top-of-the-line but it also seemed to me 'titanium' 
(although Wikipedia informs me today, it's a magnesium alloy "roll cage").

I'm a bit wary of the X-series. These include the ultra-light models but 
also seemed to me to be a bit eXperimental or eXtreme, eg wider screens, 
connectors that didn't appear on 'standard business' models, and the 
like (but that's very much a personal interpretation/prejudice).

This list is neither complete nor (perhaps) entirely up-to-date, but 
I'll leave the latter to those who sell the beasties... As a general 
rule, in advising someone looking at purchasing second-hand, I'd be 
conservative in assessing an "R" model and prefer a "T". The rest is the 
usual alignment of machine capabilities to application needs, supply to 
demand, and cash permitting!
