You will still need drivers if using wubi, the only difference between
that and a normal install is that the filesystem is an image. There's no
virtual machines involved, or anything like that.

However, much of the time drivers aren't a problem in Linux anyway.
Especially if you do something like ask on a Linux-focussed mailing list
about it first to get input on what works.

Anyway, my hardware suggestions: things tend to work just fine, the
trickiest one is usually wifi and sometimes video. Go for Intel wifi,
and Intel video if you're not going to be playing high-end games on it.
Beware the GMA series of intel video though, I've heard about issues
with its Linux support, so if you want something with that, do some
research first.

My software suggestion is to try Ubuntu. It has good hardware support
and works well out of the box. Also, it has a big userbase, so odds are
someone has encountered problems you're likely to hit already. Once
you're familiar with that, it's worth experimenting with drug^Wother
distros a bit.
