USB Drive weirdness

Hi everyone, Running Ubuntu 10.04 - I have a 2TB usb drive. When I plug it in, it mounts it in /media and brings up a nautilus window. Cool... only.... it seems to mount it as root. Plug in a usb stick (4GB) and it mounts it as myself... Does anyone know why it has this particular inconsistency this and how to customise it? I'm assuming this is a function of Gnome given that it doesn't happen if logged into the terminal...
