I don't know what Akonadi does exactly, but I don't have your automatic assumption that just because kmail uses akonadi, it suddenly stores its emails in akonadi, mysql, some other database, or its own proprietary format. Afterall kmail has used akonadi in previous versions too. And like I said it must be possible to turn all that extra stuff off for those who just want to use email.
