For what it's worth, when copying files from the command line, I
check the progress by running "ls -lh" and comparing filesizes.

On FreeBSD you can send SIGINFO (Ctrl+T in the terminal) to receive
a percentage complete message from cp, but Linux doesn't have this
functionality.
