Another option, in case Ubuntu's X configuration messed something up,
is to back-up /etc/X11/xorg.conf to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak and then
run X -configure (as root, I believe). That will put a xorg.conf in
whatever directory you run X -configure in. See what the file has in
it, and compare to your backed-up one. Taking a look at
/var/log/Xorg.0.log probably is not a bad idea either (with both
files, if they are different).
