Yup - using you distro's pkg|port scheme is the best way
to do this, even though the seti@home client is a binary.
I've got the 3.08 netbsd/sparc client running on an old
SS-5 and it runs great - just veerrry sloooowly... One
'gotcha' to be aware of: the S@H client will create it's
pid and data files in the _current_ directory, so you'll
probably want to create a startup script that changes to
an appropriate place before starting S@H. On NetBSD that
is /var/run/... ; on Linux it's something like /proc/...?
IIRC, there is a handly shell script on the SETI site that
can be used as a template.
