I heard the tail end of the guy from didtheyreadit.com blathering about
it on today on NPR, curious to see what they were actually doing I
signed up for it.  

It's another web-bug scheme with the minorly clever addition of slowly
dripping out the single pixle gif and not closing the http connection so
they can measure "how long" the message was "open".  There's a bug
however where it can't measure more than a 2 minute open time or send to
multiple recipients with the service.  If you have external image
loading turned off all of this tracking won't work of course.
