Often this means that the package in Portage is not working the way 
install-from-source users might expect.  It's not uncommon for complex 
packages to be set up in a particular (not necessarily standard) way.

I'd check with the Gentoo forums as the definitive guide to what does 
and doesn't work on Gentoo.

Out of curiosity... what's the product?
