Well, I'm finally getting around to this. I like the idea of using the 
IDE devices AS IDE devices, so I'm game for upgrading the kernel to 2.6. 
I'm not having good results searching for information on how to do that, 
though. My Google searches for module utils didn't turn up anything that 
made any sense to me. Nor was I successful in finding a Debian oriented 
HOWTO for upgrading the kernel.

Can anyone recommend a good source for documentation on this process? 
I'm happy to read and learn, but most of what I have found so far 
assumes that I already know what I'm doing.

Also, I'm not tied to Debian, if there is a distribution that already 
has the 2.6 kernel, and is recommended. I like the apt-get process, but 
I'm willing to learn something else if I need to.
