I can't comment on the wisdom of FC2, but I *will* offer you one bit of 
input on using your wife's word processing / IM box for commerce 
hosting: don't do it.  Seriously, don't even think about it.

Providing decent commerce hosting is hard enough to do without 
introducing the various risks and issues that come with hosting at home 
  and maintaining unrelated software.

My advice would be to do one of three things:

1. Get a server-grade box and host it colo.
2. Get yourself a "virtual colo" from pdxcolo.net or a similar vendor.
3. Outsource the hosting.  There are at least a couple of us here who do
    this regularly and can provide some ready-made solutions.

#2 is a very reasonable option if you're looking to start on the 
cheap... low-powered (but fully connected) systems can be had for as 
little as $20/mo.

SELinux is is available on a wide range of distros.  Last I heard, it's
