I was the other coworker but I didn't upgrade by accident. I was planning
to play with suse anyway and, since the drive was going to be wiped,
decided to see if one could move from rh9 to fedora using apt.

The upgrade took about 6 hours (guess I used real slow repos) but it went
flawlessly. Played with it for a day or so and wiped it.
