actually not very far off from stupid.  i did encounter this same
behavior in earlier versions of FC and RedHat.  must be something with
the drivers.  personally, i hated plugging it into the PINK (microphone
input) since that port is not meant to be used as an output, and there
might be some problems with the signal levels or frequency response.
but i got crappy speakers then so that didn't matter much.
