resolving local area network computers via computer name

Please enlighten me on this one.

At the office, we are using linux as our server (dev, staging) and we are
able to access it using it's name 'devserv' without us having to edit the
our host file in order to map 'devserv' to whatever is the IP address of our
server. But today, we can't resolve 'devserv' anymore. Our IP address is
server-assigned by our LinkSys DSL router and the assign DNS's (1 & 2) are
all public addresses (of our telco provider). Now, how did the
hostname-to-IP resolution get through even though I'm sure that our DNS's
server did not have any record of our local server's IP address?

Also, we need to resolve 'devserv' automatically.. what should I do? Newbie
on DNS here :)
