First, let us remind ourselves that running Linux on a Pentium I or 486 is ONE OF THE FEATURES OF LINUX, that's the reason why Linux became so popular among Administrators because you can have a fully functional and reliable server without spending too much on a hardware unlike using Windoz.

second, jess, i would highly recommend "Vector Linux", it has a 2.6 core kernel, on top of that, is a fluxbox, which is a very lite on your hardware.

However, i'm not sure about openoffice.org (2) for your word process, because i think it needs a min. of 64mb for the memomy, but compare to previous version, it is much better and faster.
