If I may suggest, since rh9 does come with sysop tools (duh...I didn't
realized I used that word!)...why not try running 'setup' in root.  Then
select network, then configure from there.
See what effect it has on the files in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0.
Then you learn it how to configure by hand.
