Are you trying to recompile the one on
/usr/src/kernels/2.6.9-22.EL-i686 ? If that's the case, those are only
kernel headers needed to be able to build some kernel related stuff
like nVidia's proprietary drivers. It does not contain the whole
source code.

If find it strange that CentOS 4.2 does not include
kernel-source-*.rpm packages anymore, unlike older releases. If you
really need to recompile the kernel, you'll need to do it using the
source RPMs instead.
