Fixing open sourced proprietary code for porting to Linux

I must be missing something. Learning from formerly closed code might just
need a special mind set or training? I learn a lot but I mostly have to
rewrite to "clean" them up or just redesign and reimplement from scratch. I
have a deep inferiority complex towards the software engineering elite in
the closed Kingdoms but I am not expecting this.

What's your experience guys?

Are they open sourcing fugly code on purpose?
