Hi Roberto,
The IANA site provides some information around how to set up a root server.=

There is also here:
http://www.root-servers.org/

From my experience, many ISPs here in the US just run a DNS caching service=
and sometimes just ignores the TTL. =C2=A0Due to the sheer number of reque=
sts to DNS serves maintained by companies like AT&T, Verizon or Earthlink, =
the servers (or clusters) quickly become populated with almost all the serv=
ers that their customers visit.
It seems they adjust the TTL to 30 mins to 4 hours, to reduce the outbound =
UDP calls required for the update
There were also some attempts in the past to break away from the approved T=
LDs -- there were a couple of companies that set up their own root servers =
and sold "realnames" instead of the usual TLD. =C2=A0

Hi Mike,

I'm only asking for interest in joining a learning process, not really abou=
t any commitment to set up a root server.

And for further clarification: I'm not talking of DNS servers for subdomain=
s, which a big firm might want to do. I'm talking of alternatives to the IC=
ANN root server. At least two already exist that I know of, the OpenRoot in=
itiative maintains one, and China does too, I am told.

Greetings to all,

Obet

for the former. =C2=A0I am interested, but am on the fence about participa=
ting because I'm also thinking of the latter, as it will, for me, justify l=
earning the former. =C2=A0Setting up a root DNS server behind the firewall,=
as fooler points out, can contribute to the security of the enterprise net=
work. =C2=A0I'm unsure if I can commit to setup and operate one for my pres=
ent employer. Hence, sitting on the fence for now.
