No direct experience, but I've been following the project with interest
from its beginning.

Depending on the extent of your devotion to GNOME, MATE, Cinnamon, KDE,
and/or Razor-qt[1], and to NetworkManager, the best answer might be
'Debian'.  

I've investigated using a Debian 8 'Jessie' scratch system, and written

Page includes tested, detailed instructions for replacing systemd with
OpenRC and making sure systemd cannot return.  And, as clarified in my
footnotes, you should also be able to use the same method to adopt any
of the _other_ inits packaged by Debian:   sysvinit, upstart, or runit.

I just happen to really like OpenRC, which is BSD-derived.


[1] Those DE's big metapackages depend on systemd because one or two
DE packages comprising the metapackage do.  Therefore, you can install 
_substantively_ all of the DE by installing its constituent packages
(and still not pull in systemd), just not the whole kitchen sink.
