Her recollection was that this involved right-justifying text on the
line.  The solution was provided, she said, by Steve Savitzky on this
mailing list on around December 1998.  However, I've just gone through a

...and _not_ found it.  (Her name was Deirdre Saoirse at the time, and
there aren't that many Saoirses this far west of Ireland, except of 
course Hollywood actress Saoirse Ronan.)

This last post is the one that mentions /usr/bin/man, and the error
wasn't a segfault but rather 'fatal error: too many symbols'.
