WINE 2.0 has had its long-awaited 2.0 release. If you've been waiting
to run MS-Office 2013 semi-quasi-natively on x86 Linux (or Mac OS X for
Intel), hey, now you can.
I'm trying to act like yr. enterprising reporter on this subject, even
though I'm not the natural userbase (can't think of any Win32 code I
especially need to run), and so apologise in advance if I miss important
stuff. That warning having been given, what I see is:
o partial Human Interface Device HID support (but still no USB)
o 64-bit support (on, e.g., OS X)
o "winebrowser" helper application now works with multiple arguments to
invoke the host browser or mailer.
o Web Services API that allows basic SOAP (Simple Object Access
Protocol) calls, which is what enables MS-Office 2013 to run.
o Direct3D (attention, gamers), various improvements to graphics,
text, and font support.
Direct3D command stream, Android graphics driver support, and USB
device support are on the agenda next.
winehq.org has binary packages for a bunch of distros, though you're
better off getting them through your distro's package release process
for the usual reasons (http://linuxmafia.com/~rick/weatherwax.html#1).
