In May 2017, I put Linux Lite 3.4:

, on a friend's Lenovo E3000 N500 laptop, TYPE 4223-53U 08/11 (1GB RAM,
as I recall.) Linux Lite 3.4 is based on Ubuntu Xenial 16.04. I'm not an
Ubuntu fan, due to systemd, but my friend's a Regular Guy(TM), not in
tech, and this distribution brought this machine of his back to life.
(It's not his sole machine, but still.)

Xubuntu is also lightweight. I wiped ChromeOS from my ASUS C300 Chrome-
book and am running GalliumOS 2.1, an Xubuntu derivative, on it. I'm not
keen that it too is running systemd, but I'm swallowing that for now.
The machine being modern plus it running Xubuntu makes it very snappy,
even though it only has 2GB RAM.

p.s. This is a Linux User Group list, but, for completeness, I recently
put FreeBSD 11.1-RELEASE on a circa 2007 Toshiba Satellite A215-S7437
(processor=1.9GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-58; RAM=4GB). I'm running Xfce
4.12 quite happily on it. I'm not going to win any races with this
thing, but it gives me a non-systemd system in the house. (I didn't feel
that Devuan 1.0.0 was ready for prime-time, and I didn't want to go back
to Slackware, even though I loved it in its time, because I don't want
to give up software packaging with dependency checking.)
