How to set the default font in a **Plain TeX** document

Hi all,

This isn't about LaTeX or ConTeXT or the other gargantuan macro sets.
This is about *Plain TeX*, which for the most part maps much better to
the XML that already contains my information. I am also using Eplain, a
very lightweight macro addon for TeX, so an Eplain solution would be
equally good.

I already know I can do this:

\font\myfont = "ec-qcsr" at 14pt

And I know I can use that font, going forward, by doing:

\myfont

But the thing is, my begin and end macros that use \begingroup and
\endgroup start with a font baseline that's the document's default
font, and just naming a font to go forward doesn't change the default
font. I've tried setting \normalfont and that didn't work. Any other
ideas?

Thanks,

SteveT
