Ruby on Rails has some very particular ways of doing things. I tried fighting them at first and had a disaster, so I know the feeling. Once I embraced the constraints, I found it pretty easy to work with.

Remember that you can push to multiple repositories, so there’s no reason to decide Gitlab *or* Bitbucket. You can push to both.
