is nmh (new MH) multi-identity capable?

All,
Good evening. Are there any nmh[1] users in the house?
I'm an Emacs user who's contemplating transitioning to nmh (with MH-E)
for email, from VM 7.19[2]. VM has long worked for me, but it's time to
enter the 2010's from the 2000's; in particular, VM doesn't support mul-
tiple email identities. My use case is that of a typical desktop machine;
I don't have a local SMTP daemon running, but instead use Emacs's own
smtpmail-sent-it. Presently, I'm sending and fetching mail for my second
identity via a web browser, but I want to get away from that.
I'll need to configure, of course, a separate set of SMTP and POP/IMAP
hosts for each identity. Can this be done with nmh? My initial read is
of their FAQ and mailing list archives is that the answer is, "Yes, but
sort of as a kludge, as mh was originally designed in the days when this
wasn't something users were needing."
If there's anyone here who's presently doing this, I'd be grateful to
learn if all that's required for multiple email identities is appropri-
ate configuration of the two files /etc/nmh/mts.conf and ~/.mh_profile.
Much obliged,
Eric
p.s. I'm not wedded to nmh; I might also try NotMuch[3] or mu4e[3]. My
requirement is only that I be able to do my emailing from within Emacs
in an xterm. So I'd also welcome your general thoughts here. Because,
who knows, I might try nmh if it works and simply find it not to my
liking.
p.p.s. I'm not even *really* wedded to needing multiple email identities
per single (Unix) user identity. It's not a showstopper for me to create
another user and work that way, I just prefer not to have to do so.
Again, many thanks. --Eric
