I use X2Go (NX protocol) for remote access, both WAN and Lan.  ssh -X 
only on LAN when running single program (e.g., Thunderbird).   Use VNC 
for remote to Windows VM/boxes, Remmina for odd situations (better 
support for scaling).

It looks like Wayland supports RDP and VNC.
