DigitalOcean is an excellent provider for a VPS. I also used to run my own e-mail server with them, but fighting the spam with Postfix + Dovecot + other software's configuration tweaks started to get taxxing after ten years. So I moved my e-mail to Fastmail and I've enjoyed it ever since.

So all in all i would recommend doing DigitalOcean for a shell/files/web service, and Fastmail for e-mail.

Best of luck,
Zack

They took shell access away earlier this year (2024), and their help desk tells me they no longer offer a secure way for domain holders to copy files up to them, only insecure FTP. Ridiculous and disappointing.
