: GNUplot help

Greetings,

I'm trying to graph the following data, in my attempt to learn GNUplot.

# date     notkept
2014-04-01 50
2014-04-02 63
2014-04-03 120
2014-04-04 55
2014-04-05 60
2014-04-06 63
2014-04-07 52

I have this plot script:
#!/usr/bin/gnuplot

set title "Promise Not Kept"
set xlabel "Date"
set ylabel "Count"
set xdata time
set timefmt "%Y-%m-%d"
set format x "%Y-%m-%d"
set grid
plot 'test.dat'
pause -1

When I run it I get this error:
plot 'test.dat'
               ^
"./test.sh", line 10: Need full using spec for x time data

What have I done wrong?
