In principle, rotational symmetry is an enhancement that Apple added when they introduced their "Lightning" cable. (Which is so proprietary that Apple apparently "put a fix in", politically, in China, so that only approved vendors can carry them... < http://club.dx.com/forums/forums.dx/threadid.1344269>) Unfortunately, I hear reports that the Lightning connectors are otherwise rather fragile, so they need to get replaced pretty frequently :-(. I'd be a bit worried that USB could head down the same road.
