Thanks, that pointed me in the right direction. Seems it's a long-standing
problem in the Ubuntu kernel at least, and has nothing to do with KDE. This
post from Ubuntu 12.04 solved my problem:

I only needed the first step for my Thinkpad T420 even though it does have
HDA audio.
