Yes, all the big SAN vendors (EMC, NetApp, etc) are moving to SAS disks. I would very much like to see these 'whitebox' storage systems - do you have any more information? Wanted to share what I know as I have done some research in the 10-24 TB storage space (NAS on 1Ge and 10Ge fabric). Supermicro and Tyan make bare bones storage system with various options for net connectivity, duplex RAID cards etc. with 12/16/24 HDD bays that can be expanded. Some of the boxes can be converted to SAN should your requirement change. To the best of my knowledge they come with Linux firmware. Have more spindles in the array, go for 500GB rather than 1TB and hardware RAID. At one trade show I have seen a vendor demo cluster with SAS switches, claiming better through put than FC.
