They just recently (for the most part) consolidated their services. So you can use your google apps with google voice, and pretty much anything google related except for youtube for some reason. The real question which I don't hasn't been addressed is.... why are you trying to run your own server. What are you train to obtain that isn't provided by a service provider free of charge. Are you trying to learn how to do it? Are you trying to have finer granular control over your data? I'd advise you to setup a mail server for an experience perspective, its a fun thing to have, and allows you to learn a good bit. Setup an IMAP server, mailman and such. But if you want reliability and stability? I dunno.. gapps is just so easy and requires no real headaches.... right.. google owns your data.. big deal... you pay for the convenience with a bit of targeted ads. You buy email hosting from some other provider and they own your data too.
