My Creative webcam works with Kopete and just about another app without any 
fuss.  You can use the command line to record things really quickly with;
cat /dev/video >> temp.mpg
then play the file with mplayer.  If you have no /dev/video then your system is 
not detecting the camera or can not load a driver for it.
