Extremely late to the party at this point, but I thought I'd put in my $.02
anyway.

I have heard it often repeated that a resume gets 8 seconds on average
before someone decides either to let the candidate progress to the next step
in the interviewing process. While there are exceptions it does hold true
that your resume is a marketing piece that only gets a few seconds of
consideration and this is where certificaitions can come in very handy.

"Yourname, RHCE, CCNA, Linux+" at the top of the resume with the associated
graphics at the bottom looks better than "Yourname" alone. In addition the
first person who looks at your resume may very well be an HR person with NO
techical background at all. If the "required" list for the job that they've
gotten from IT says, "RHCE" and you don't have it, tough! Goodbye!

Now you probably won't (or at least shouldn't) get a job simply because of
your certification but it may get you the interview.

One thing I would caution against as I burnt myself with this is, don't get
certifications that are above the level of work that you will be doing. If
you're a beginning Linux Admin don't get something like an RHCE or RHCA(?!)
as what will happen is that you won't have the experience to actually get
the job that would require a cert of that level and you'll set your salary
beyond what a beginning admin will be getting. In short you'll be
simultaniously over and under qualified. Joy!
